An interior designer in Saint-Tropez designs the layout, lighting and materials for a villa, coordinating plans and tradespeople right through to the final touches. Their work encompasses both the structure of the property and its setting, from the overall layout right down to the bespoke joinery.

Every project begins with an analysis of the site, its uses, its lighting and its constraints. This assessment then informs the plans, materials and layout solutions.

What role does an interior designer play in a villa in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez?

An interior designer does more than simply match colours or choose a sofa: they conceive the villa as a coherent whole, where circulation, light and materials complement one another from one room to the next. Their work often begins long before the choice of fabric, with the analysis of plans, the study of existing openings and the decision on what should be retained and what warrants rethinking. On the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, in the Var region where the low evening light redefines every façade, this analysis takes on particular significance: a villa facing the sea does not follow the same rules as a country house set back amongst the pine trees.

Coordinating tradespeople, discussing a specific construction detail with a joiner, choosing a palette of natural materials that complements the Mediterranean light without overwhelming it: this is what sets this profession apart from a mere decorative service. Look at the story the space tells before seeking to transform it – this is often the first lesson learnt by homeowners who settle here. The interior designer then acts as a technical yet sensitive conductor, capable of creating a dialogue between an existing structure and a family’s contemporary lifestyle, without ever succumbing to the temptation of a superficial style. The right balance here lies as much in the rigour of the plan as in the attention paid to what the house already offers.

What is the difference between an interior architect and an interior designer?

The interior designer works on the structure: they amend the plans, move a partition wall, rethink a circulation route or a line of sight between two spaces, and coordinate the trades on site. The interior decorator, on the other hand, works within a pre-established framework: furniture, textiles, lighting and accessories. On any given project, the two professions often complement rather than conflict with one another; one sets the framework, the other brings it to life. There is no need to rank them in order of importance; one simply needs to understand which best meets the actual need at hand: transforming a space, or simply bringing it to life.

How does an interior design project unfold, from the initial sketch to completion?

A project rarely follows a straight path, but there are a few steps that almost always recur:

  1. Assessing the site: observing how the light changes throughout the day, identifying the views across the gulf, and understanding the constraints of the existing structure.

  2. Sketches and plans: translating the ways in which the home is used into circulation patterns, volumes and reimagined openings.

  3. The choice of the mineral colour scheme and materials – stone, render and timber – is in keeping with the climate and the low-angle light characteristic of the peninsula.

  4. Cost estimates with the tradespeople: joiners, stonemasons and metalworkers, whose expertise determines whether the design concept is feasible.

  5. The building site: regular monitoring, on-site decision-making, and adjustments to the finer details of the work.

  6. Receipt and delivery: checking that each part meets the specifications set out in the original plan.

Chaque étape prépare la suivante et permet d’ajuster le projet avant la réception.

What is the role of site supervision?

Site supervision is the stage at which the design concept set out on the plans is brought to life. The interior designer coordinates the trades, monitors the finishes as they are carried out, and makes the last-minute decisions that inevitably arise on a building site – whether it’s a bespoke joinery joint that needs reviewing or a floor layout that needs adjusting. It is a job that requires both a hands-on presence and the ability to make decisions: without this supervision, even the most precise plan can be lost in the execution.

How much should you budget for an interior designer in Saint-Tropez?

The budget depends on the scale of the work, the standard of finish, the proportion of bespoke work, and the scope of the project entrusted to the agency. An accurate quotation therefore requires an initial discussion, a site survey and a clear definition of the scope of work.

Fees themselves vary from firm to firm: some charge a flat fee for the entire project, whilst others charge an hourly rate for one-off assignments or consultancy work. Key points to bear in mind before committing: always ask exactly what the fee covers – design only, or including site supervision – how changes during the project are invoiced, and whether quotes from tradespeople are provided separately or included in the scope of work. Asking these questions at the very first meeting will help avoid many misunderstandings once the building work has started.

How do you choose the right interior designer on the peninsula?

The choice is rarely based on a promise of style. A few practical criteria can help you make up your mind:
